With the summer break getting underway, it’s all hands to the pump at Air New Zealand with passenger numbers expected to peak today as close to 60,000 holidaymakers head to their destinations.

On its domestic network alone, the airline will today operate more than 45,000 seats across around 530 flights.

General Manager Customer Experience Anita Hawthorne is reminding travellers to allow themselves plenty of time and to consider taking out travel insurance.

"Naturally our airports are going to be much busier than usual over the holidays and we ask our customers to be patient as we work to get them to their destinations on time.

"We’re doing all we can behind the scenes to ensure a seamless customer experience with additional staff rostered on, including 350 corporate employees who have volunteered their time to support their airport colleagues and get our customers to where they need to go.

"For peace of mind however, we recommend allowing extra time to get to and through the airports, signing up to our Travel Alerts service to ensure we have correct contact details on file should we need to reach out to you and consider taking out travel insurance to cover for any unexpected situations that may arise outside of our control," says Ms Hawthorne.

Strong summer demand means Air New Zealand will operate 2.2 million seats across its domestic network over the peak December-January period, 90,000 more than the same period last year. The airline has added more than 180 extra flights between 21 and 31 December to get holidaymakers to and from their destinations.
