TVNZ is showing its commitment to political coverage with new press gallery appointments and a primetime timeslot for Q+A.

Benedict Collins and Maiki Sherman will join Political Editor Jessica Mutch in 1 NEWS' press gallery from June and August respectively.

Both Sherman and Collins bring substantial political reporting experience to their new roles. Sherman is currently a reporter for TVNZ 1’s Seven Sharp. She has held roles with Te Karere, Te Kaea, Native Affairs as well as in the gallery with Newshub. Collins joins TVNZ from RNZ's political team.

From Sunday 29th July, Q+A will move from a morning slot to primetime on TVNZ 1. Scheduled for 9.30pm, the move will bring Q+A to a bigger audience. Hosted by Corin Dann, Q+A will continue to bring viewers the important political issues and discussions of the week. The move will complement TVNZ 1’s strong local line-up on Sunday evenings, which includes programmes such as Sunday and Hyundai Country Calendar.

John Gillespie, Head of News and Current Affairs says, "New Zealand audiences are deeply engaged with politics. Viewers turned to TVNZ in record numbers during the 2017 elections and we’re seeing a continued interest in polls, political discussions and stories across our news and current affairs output this year."

"We’re pleased to announce these strong appointments to our press gallery and it will be great to see Q+A reach a primetime audience with its move to Sunday nights."

TVNZ's political coverage will be centre stage this Thursday with the 1 NEWS Budget Special, live on TVNZ 1 from 2pm. Presented by Corin Dann, the programme will cross to Jessica Mutch and Simon Dallow at Parliament to bring viewers analysis and reaction to Finance Minister Grant Robertson’s first budget.
