Queenstown company Formatt Bespoke Joinery Co. is the recipient of a coveted national award, receiving the Highly Commended Best Kitchen prize at the annual NZ Master Joiners Awards held in Auckland on Saturday night (9 June).

It is the second year running that the company has been recognised, having won the Best Otago/Southland Region Award in 2017. Angela Spackman and Reuben Bogue, who took over the company in 2016, say the step up from a regional prize to national level recognition comes thanks to their team’s uncompromising focus on quality workmanship.

"We think this award is great recognition for our talented, committed team," says Spackman. "Our clients enjoy the results of the team’s attention to detail and commitment to quality but getting nationally recognised gives us a benchmark against the whole country. This acknowledgement helps us as a company to continue to produce the highest quality work."

The award-winning kitchen - a combination of solid oak tongue and groove wall panelling, oak veneer cabinetry, steel handles, Caeserstone bench tops and LED lighting - required a high level of technical expertise and exceptional craftsmanship across many staff and suppliers.

The judges commented: "Clean classic lines with the use of a limited palette of materials and finishes resulting in a kitchen that sits well in its surrounding. Solid long lasting durable kitchen."

The aim of the NZ Master Joiners Awards is to promote excellence in joinery design and craftsmanship, to encourage the use of sustainable timbers, and to showcase the finest work from the industry. These are the largest industry awards of their kind in New Zealand.

Judging criteria includes design, workmanship, innovative use of materials, complexity of project, and visual appeal. Kitchen design is judged on the WOW factor, cutting edge design, practicality, and creative use of materials and colour.

The Highly Commended Award is only given in the Best Kitchen category. The overall winner of the Best Kitchen Award was Hamish Kane of Firman Joinery, Oamaru.
