Today Chorus has confirmed that subsidised wholesale pricing for Dunedin’s gigabit fibre connections, as part of the Gigatown competition, will end on 30 June 2019 - but luckily for Dunedin customers of Stuff Fibre, the special pricing will be extended until that date in 2020.

"The announcement by Chorus is likely to bring an end to cheaper gigabit pricing for many Dunedin consumers, with the move putting pressure on Internet Service Providers to pass on the extra cost," says Stuff Fibre General Manager, Wayne Miller.

"But we love the internet as much as our customers do, so even though our prices will no longer be subsidised by Chorus, we’re giving them the chance to make the most of the fastest fibre broadband available by honouring our cheaper pricing for an extra year."

Since Dunedin was named New Zealand’s Gigatown five years ago - coming out on top out of 27 towns and cities to get one-gigabit-per-second internet, the fastest in the Southern Hemisphere - gigabit fibre has been rolled out to nearly 53,000 homes and businesses, and there have been around 13,000 new gigabit connections.

While the subsidised Gigatown pricing scheme is coming to an end, Chorus assures Gigatown residents that the benefits of the fast internet will continue. For instance, the average small business and household broadband speed in the city hit 361Mbps last month, four times the national average, and the 14 gigabit-powered Wi-Fi hotspots available across the city will stay up and running.

Stuff Fibre will continue its current pricing for customers on a gigabit plan up to the end of June 2020. New and existing Dunedin Stuff Fibre customers can add the gigabit extension to their plan.
