Takapuna deadline tomorrow for visionary developers

Developers keen on creating a high-profile legacy for Takapuna only have until tomorrow to formally express their interest with Panuku Development Auckland.

Over the past several weeks CBRE has been seeking high-calibre developers to partner with council organisation Panuku. However, the opportunity to develop a whole new precinct for Takapuna is fast running out with the Expressions of Interest process closing on Monday.

With Panuku leading the charge, the massive ‘Unlock Takapuna’ urban regeneration project is second only to Wynyard Quarter in size and scale, says Terence Harpur, chief executive of Takapuna Beach Business Association.

"The same team at Panuku who worked on Wynyard Quarter is now working on Takapuna, with the success of that model set to be replicated here," he says.

Key to Takapuna’s transformation is the delivery of a high-quality mixed-use precinct at the site of the current Anzac Street carpark. There about 6,000sqm of land will be made available for commercial, residential and retail to the successful developer or developers from mid-2020.

Mr Harpur says another component of the ‘Unlock Takapuna’ project is a new town square earmarked for part of the Anzac Street site which Panuku will deliver with a budget of $7 million.

"Town centres are all about people and our new 3,000sqm town square, which will connect with Hurstmere Road, will provide a real heart for Takapuna. We’ll be encouraging everyone to have their say on the town square’s draft design in the coming months."

Later this year Takapuna’s main street, Hurstmere Road, is set for a major upgrade while a large new carpark building on Huron Street is currently being constructed by Panuku.

"As well as all the commercial regeneration and creation of new public spaces and amenities, Takapuna is effectively being re-orientated. Our town centre will have a whole new east-west flow and much better linkages to the best beach in Auckland!"

He says ‘Unlock Takapuna’ makes up several projects. However, getting the right developer, or developers, to deliver a world-class precinct with retail and restaurants below and apartments and offices above is the most critical piece.

"It’s a huge opportunity with tomorrow being an important milestone for those keen to shape the future of Takapuna," says Terence Harpur.
