Energy retailer Nova Energy is entering the Auckland market this month, rolling out an innovative plan to help more Kiwis go solar, save on their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

Nova, part of the Todd Energy group, is offering residents in the City of Sails a solar hot water and electricity plan which allows the consumer to pay for solar installation via their monthly electricity bill.

"This has already proven very popular with many households signing up in the Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Waikato," said Nova Energy spokesperson Cressida Gates.

At the end of five years homeowners will have effectively future-proofed their energy costs and will make significant savings on their energy bills plus they will also have added a $5500 asset to their home, Ms Gates said.

Nova believes the solar market is "largely untapped" in New Zealand with only 40,000 of the 1.7 million Kiwi homes fitted with solar, and just 3078 solar installations registered in 2008.

Nova's focus is to significantly grow the solar market. Through Nova Energy consumers can also take advantage of the $1000 government solar grant.

A solar hot water system can provide up to 75 per cent of a home's hot water needs every year[1]. Every installed solar panel cuts New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions by around 1.4 tonnes of carbon every year[2].

The residential target for Nova Energy is a big one - most of the North Island. Nova Energy has already launched in Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Wellington and recently Waikato.

Nova Energy is also offering Aucklanders its Dual Fuel gas/electricity plan which offers one fixed daily charge for households that use both natural gas and electricity.

Nova Energy is already the dominant player in the commercial gas market in Auckland.

Nova Energy is exhibiting at the Auckland Yellow Homeshow this week. Following on from the homeshow residential customers across Auckland will be targeted in a suburb by suburb campaign.

This campaign provides consumers with a free energy audit undertaken by Nova Energy.
