The Warehouse remains committed to pursuing negotiation processes with the National Distribution Union (NDU) after union members threatened strike action over a proposed employment agreement.
Despite numbers of The Warehouse staff attending stop work meetings today, The Warehouse's General Manager of Human Resources, Paul Walsh, was quick to confirm this is not a case of staff taking formal strike action.
Speaking from The Warehouse's head office, Walsh said, "These team members are not on strike. They are attending legal stop work meetings, in most cases for two hours, and returning to work immediately afterwards."
He went on to observe that this activity is affecting a maximum of one in four team members and it's very much business as usual, with The Warehouse staff offering its usual great service at all 86 stores across New Zealand.
The NDU has claimed that The Warehouse is threatening non-union members with a non-payment of bonus because of actions by union members. Commenting on this allegation, Walsh says, The Warehouse remains focused on delivering benefits to all its team members.
"Our store bonuses are based on achieving sales and customer satisfaction targets. We feel the NDU has taken out of context part of a letter sent to non-NDU team members, commenting on how the two months prior to Christmas are critical to profitability.
"As opposed to any form of threat, it is a simple reality that if we do not achieve our targets during this critical trading period, it will almost inevitably affect potential bonus payments for all 8,000 team members.
"As a business, we are working to the best of our ability to ensure customer satisfaction is not compromised should industrial action take place."

NDU Shame on you!!!! Lying
NDU Shame on you!!!!
Lying to the media and threatening strike action is only hurting the employee in the long run because you are having a negative impact on the employee employer relationship.
I think it is great that The Warehouse are going above and beyond to treat all employees equally, including the trouble making NDU members. If NDU continues their parade of false accusations they are only threatening the employmjent and the wellbeing of their own union members.
It's simple, The Warehouse have to make money in order to sustain itself and continue to keep their employees. If employees do not want to help The Warehouse make money it's just like saying they no longer need a job. Frankly, The warehouse should fire these un-loyal employees and only keep the loyal hard working ones that actually value their job and their social welfare.
As for Thye Warehouse, stad strong!! Good on you for keeping your employees and trying to be efficient rather than making them all redundant like so many other companies have done.
No shame on you! The NDU are
No shame on you! The NDU are doing a great job and just remember when working conditions improve through negotiations from the NDU, all employees will benefit not just the ones who PAY union fees and take risks for better working conditions. NDU members are also hard working which is why they want to better their working conditions and NOT have to change their hours and days again! Dont judge people for wanting to hold onto what theyve got and imrove things, theyre not greedy, just normal hardworking mums, dads, grans, etc wanting to provide their families with the normal things! I hope this can be resolved ASAP and good on the NDU for taking a stand for ALL workers. As for the lies, what lies?
The NDU has the best
The NDU has the best interest of the staff the warehouse are saying that the BONUS is as risk fact is around (90%)of the time there is no bonus as for there 3% payrise they forgot to mention that they has made a deal in around 2007 and locked it in for 3 years them saying the gave a pay rise is a joke (lol) because they didnt have a choose. One thing is for sure if there's nothing to hide why only give half information.
Here something to think about xmas it is there busyest time of the year but then there is not thanks to the staff a card or a gift would be nice but no there isnt on the other hand the management get taken out get a gift and credit for work that is done by there staff it's funny as they want the workers to work hard yet dont want to reward them for there efforts
A pretty crappy attitude
A pretty crappy attitude from The Warehouse, and totally expected. Part of the continued instistance in forcing hard working New Zealanders into a regime of 'living to work' rather than 'working to live' - forcing as many hours as they can whilst paying as little as possible.
