16 OCTOBER 2008 - Putting power behind the pedals, Contact Energy has today confirmed its role as Gold Sponsor for the 2008 Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge.

Contact also becomes principal partner of the more than 1000 volunteers required over the week.

"Taupo is a key area for us, both in terms of customer base and generation so we're naturally keen to support events that are important to the people in the area and that provide significant benefits to the local community," said Contact Sponsorship Manager, Craig Griffiths

"The 31 year-old cycle challenge is an integral part of the Taupo events calendar. The fact that it offers a range of challenges for every level of rider and at the same time returns all proceeds to the local community has great appeal for Contact."

As part of its sponsorship, Contact is providing new high visibility vests for volunteers to help ensure their safety on the roads.

"Health and safety is a paramount focus at Contact so we're delighted to be able to contribute in this way," Mr Griffiths said.

Adding a new dimension to this year's Challenge is the Contact Huka Mountain Bike Challenge .

"We believe the Contact Huka Challenge, weaving its way through 75 kilometres of mountain biking tracks in and around Wairakei, including active steam fields, will add another level to what is already a world class event," Mr Griffiths said.

Reports from Contact staff confirm the standard of the race from a participant's point of view.

Tim Wilding, from Contact's Wairakei Geothermal Power Plant, who recently tried out the course said, "They've put a lot of thought into the course, so it's a fun and challenging ride. And a great way to show off what geothermal power generation is all about."
