Federated Farmers Busts 1080 Myths In Its Latest Magazine

In the lead feature of the latest edition of the National Farming Review, currently being posted to Federation members, Federated Farmers has laid down the gauntlet to anti-1080 groups.

"1080 works but the growing mythology about it doesn't," says Don Nicolson, President of Federated Farmers.

"The article in the summer edition of the National Farming Review was independently written by ecological journalist Dave Hansford. He makes it very clear that unless we want to kiss our economy and native fauna and flora goodbye, then 1080 is the tool to use.

"Most importantly, he debunks the lies, half-truths and pseudo science used by 1080 opponents. It seems they are forced into making ever more outrageous claims, so by putting the facts forward, we have given our members the resources to counter with fact.

"I think anyone who has been into a forest where 1080 is used appreciates how quickly our native ecosystems bounce back once possums, rats, weasels and other pests are removed.

"For farming, this reduces the threat of bovine tuberculosis and the immense economic problems that come with it. By backing 1080, Federated Farmers stands together with the Department of Conservation, the Animal Health Board and Forest & Bird.

"Yet the National Farming Review is not just about asking 'what's your poison?'. It also has a second major feature on Horizons Regional Council's One Plan to rule them all. Federated Farmers asks if the One Plan is an expensive bridge too far.

"The focus seems to be about one element in the periodic table, Nitrogen, when the greatest impacts on river quality seem to come from urban and industrial sources. You can't have a sensible debate when the focus is not on the major sources of pollution.

"We've also interviewed all of our provincial leaders and water continues to be a big theme from drought struck Northland down to Southland where we have a surfeit. This is both in terms of water quality as well as water quantity and access, too.

"These interviews are about shaping 2010 through the eyes of our members. They give a hint to the opportunities that lay ahead for the Federation over the next 12 months," Mr Nicolson concluded.

The following are lead articles in the summer edition of the National Farming Review:

Of course 1080 works - it is

Of course 1080 works - it is one of the most toxic substances available to us in New Zealand. It kills everything that gets sufficient access to it in a manner which is very in-humane, long drawn out pain and spasms of muscles and neurological effects followed by death for most species.
What it doesn't do is distinguish between its intended kill and the substantial by-kill.
We do know how it kills - we do not know and have not done any scientific study to find out the long term population effects on the people of New Zealand of continued small non-lethal doses.
Other countries have indicated that it is a mens fertility issue, that it can alter the size of fully formed organs within the body, shrink the testes and enlarge the heart. This is confirmed within the Department Of Conservation's own intranet site.It is a teratogen - alters the foetus and embryo.
It is a poison that New Zealanders are coming out against, more each day - we carry on using it at our peril - how can we think that New Zealand Farmers should have a support role to play for poisoning all the potential wildlife asset that is out there, plus sublethal poisoning of our own stock with no regard to future effects on our people - why do Federated Farmers think they know more than the rest of the world? Why do Forest & Bird now think 1080 is just the right thing to use? in the mid 1990s they(forest & bird) were appealing to our scientists to stop using 1080 as it was killing our native birds - no wonder both organisations are losing their grass-roots membership - who are paying now? This AHB/DOC/Feds/Forest & no-birds is part of the great gravy train that chuggs happily though NZ killing all on its way and against the wish of the people. Be on Notice, your names will be known forever as the ones who killed this country, its exports and altered our children for many generations to come. That you now come out openly and support this wholesale use of poison is forever Federated Farmers shame - your membership is declining - it will never increase while you support wholesale poisoning of this country.

The "Animal Health Board" is

The "Animal Health Board" is a very strange name for a registered charity that indiscriminately kills our native and non-native creatures. The AHB found out just how unpopular they were on the Coast last year in a telephone survey. So, they decided to do a big promo series in the newspapers to 'educate' the people. Their provided information was a bad joke. They addressed the issues pertinent to themselves, and failed to answer or address the issues pertinent to the public.

Demonise possums (Tb) and then proceed to make money from the fear. Send the Tb animal to the works, let it end up on the dinner table for locals, but definately not for export. It is ok for you and me to eat Tb infected meat, but it is not ok to export it.

So really, the AHB are a government sanctioned industry driven by fear of financial failure for farmers. Tb is just an excuse with no real credibility. The AHB extract 45 million per year off taxpayers and ratepayers, a further 37 million from levies off farmers, because they are there to fill the void between farmers who are too busy earning a living to worry about a rotten possum and taxpayers who are too busy being gouged blind. Are they too busy to worry about the international markets rejecting our exports due to the 1080 residues in foods?
Shame on this alliance of the pro-1080 groups for promoting misery and torture in our forests.

Farmers are too busy earning

Farmers are too busy earning a living to take responsibility for what is their OWN problem - Tb. Bringing disease in on the back of trucks, dirty dairying and the effluent polluting our waterways is disgusting enough, but drenching the country with deadly 1080 poison is a disgrace - and I blame the farmers for abrogating responsibility in the first place.
We are all sick and tired of the whinging farmers and their agreement to poison us all due to their own selfish, greedy and lazy attitude.

Farmers years ago used to be

Farmers years ago used to be good people. Now, they are greedy money-grubbing people who agree with killing our wildlife with 1080 because they can't be bothered managing what is their own problem, brought about by themselves. Every day in every way, farmers are getting more and more unpopular in the public mind.

Sadly as a farmer fighting

Sadly as a farmer fighting against1080 I know more than most that it is very difficult to stand up to the established poisoners group - the AHB in particular is untouchable and will not listen to us, the Feds are too busy trying to keep their membership to actually think about what is happening - yes most TB is off the back of a truck, yes some farmers do very little to avoid it but also yes most farmers do not want the poison as a solution but are made powerless by all those who support the AHb in the poison is the answer to the problem - AHB is an incorporated society and a charitable trust - un touchable and unreachable and not interested in Farmers or their desire to cease the 1080 use. They are not answerable under the Official Information Act or to the Ombudsman - they speak half truths and practice information spin. In a democracy they are a complete anathema. Time for a complete over haul, focus on the disease of TB, acknowledge that TB is not a threat to health or export whereas if we bothered to test more than a handful of meat animals a year we might find 1080 residue which has the potential to wipe our markets out over night - who know what it is doing to our people, it can not be cooked out of muscle tissue. Write to all in power and express your disgust at this situation - demand that a full, unbiased investigation is made of the AHB in particular - make the disease control more effective and educate farmers honestly on how they can avoid TB - we do not want or need 1080, 60 years is too long - we must not use any more
