KiwiRail Hopes To Re-Open Main North Line Tomorrow

KiwiRail is seeking to re-open the Main North Line to rail traffic by tomorrow evening (Thursday 16 September), almost a week after it was closed by a massive slip south of Kaikoura.

Crews have been working around the clock to clear the slip, and pending continued good progress overnight, KiwiRail hopes to be able to run trains again from Thursday evening.

KiwiRail expects to move increased volumes of freight over the weekend to ensure essential goods continue to reach Christchurch. Since the slip closed the line, KiwiRail has moved approximately 190 containers by road between Blenheim and Christchurch. KiwiRail has been working closely with New Zealand Transport Agency and contractors to clear the slip, which also closed State Highway 1.

The TranzCoastal passenger service, which had been suspended by the slip, will recommence from tomorrow but as a bus replacement until the rail line is fully open.
