22 July 2008 - "The Ministry of Fisheries is committed to the bargaining process and to the scope for negotiations agreed with unions before Christmas," said Ministry of Fisheries Chief Executive Wayne McNee.

Mr McNee was responding to a statement issued by the PSA and NUPE unions on 21 July 2008 threatening strike action if the negotiations this week do not produce a settlement. Further negotiations between union and Ministry representatives are scheduled for tomorrow and Thursday.

"The Ministry of Fisheries will continue to negotiate in good faith and remains hopeful that agreement can be reached."

"In the event of industrial action the Ministry has contingency plans in place to maintain core services and ensure fisheries continue to be protected," said Mr McNee.

"The Ministry of Fisheries is a good employer and is committed to ensuring all staff have fair and equitable employment agreements."
