The India New Zealand Business Council has a new Chair and Deputy Chair, at a crucial time in the development of trade relations between the two nations as a Free Trade Agreement comes closer.

Prominent Auckland businessman Wenceslaus Anthony and Wellington-based New Zealand-India trade specialist Raga D'silva have been appointed the Council's Chair and Deputy Chair respectively.

Mr Anthony said he was honoured with his new appointment and wants the council to be one that businesses are proud to be members of.

"I'm very clear that the INZBC needs to focus on its core competencies - access to individual intellectual wealth which every member brings with them, lobbying and providing networks for business in both countries. I would encourage businesses to use this platform and become members," he said.

Ms D'silva said she was very optimistic that the Council could grow its influence in serving trade development between the two countries.

"It's time for individuals and businesses doing trade between our two countries to pool their expertise and make a real difference.

"For me personally, I live by Mahatma Gandhi's quote, 'be the change you want to see in the world'. It's time to be a part of that difference. I look forward to using my years of experience in both countries to promote the vision and work of the India New Zealand Business Council," she said.

The Council was established in 1988 and is the longest-standing business organisation focused solely on encouraging trade between the two countries, and the most representative. It has lobbied strongly for a FTA between India and New Zealand.

This is the first time that both the Chair and Deputy Chair have been Indian-born New Zealand citizens

The two take over from Paddy Marra and Tricia Reade, respectively.
