NZ bulk wine exports up

Australia: Reduced supply and the high Australian dollar continue to pressure export volumes. Many exporters have begun to relent to margin pressure and are facing the challenge of taking their prices higher in increasingly price-sensitive global markets. Improved seasonal conditions are set to favour increased marketable production in 2012 following a dire year in 2011.

New Zealand: New Zealand wines continue to find favour in overseas markets with export volumes up 9.5% in the 10 months to October 2011, however the proportion of bulk wine exports remains higher than a year ago.

The outlook for the 2012 harvest is mixed, as an unusually cool spring and summer appear to have impacted flowering and delayed harvest in the Marlborough region, while many other regions have also had to contend with unseasonal weather patterns.

Europe: An update on the progress of the EUR 5.3 billion EU wine market reform plan that is entering an important phase in 2012. Particular attention focuses on the impact of the recently completed EU vineyard grubbing-up programme, with specific reference to Italy.
