Ports Of Auckland Preparing For Strike Action

Mediation facilitated by the Department of Labour between Ports of Auckland and the Maritime Union of New Zealand - Local 13 today failed to avert a planned 24 hour strike between 2 and 3 December.

Ports of Auckland Managing Director Jens Madsen said he was disappointed at the outcome of the meeting.

"We obviously felt it would be best if, in the interest of everyone at Ports of Auckland and particularly our customers, strike action could be averted."

"Unfortunately, despite our best efforts over an extended period, not all the issues on the table could be resolved in time."

Mr Madsen says Ports of Auckland is well prepared and has been working with customers to minimise disruptions.

Mr Madsen said the Port had agreed to meet again with the union and the mediator, prior to the planned strike. This meeting is scheduled for Friday 28 November.

"We are committed to ongoing dialogue and to achieving a fair and reasonable settlement."
