An announcement by the Ministry of Education that Queenstown's Wakatipu High School will relocate to an 8-hectare site in Remarkables Park has been welcomed by Remarkables Park Ltd director Alastair Porter.
"We're delighted for all of Queenstown's future secondary school pupils," he said.
"Their new school site is in a superb, very sunny location, at the geographical centre of the wider Queenstown area."
Mr Porter said the community would "greatly benefit" from the school's new location, which is conveniently located for families with children also at the nearby Remarkables Primary, and as such would be a major anchor for an expanded Remarkables Park integrated master plan.
"The new high school will be at the heart of future expansion of the Remarkables Park Town Centre, which has been approved to double in size, and is also near to Remarkables Park's proposed civic and other amenity facilities, which will include performing arts and a conference centre.
"The relocation will be a fantastic 'win-win' solution for the community as a whole."
"We already have a Southern Institute of Technology tertiary campus at Remarkables Park and with more tertiary facilities planned it's a great fit to have secondary and tertiary facilities in such close proximity".
The high school site is also complementary to a new childcare facility at Remarkables Park, catering for 75 children up to four years old, which is planned to open in autumn next year.
The high school in the future will also be accessed by the new Eastern Access Road running between Remarkables Park, Shotover Park and State Highway 6, as well as by walking and cycle trails connecting Remarkables Park to the wider Queenstown trail network.
Mr Porter said Remarkables Park Ltd had found the Ministry of Education team efficient and effective to work with, and looked forward to providing any further assistance they required to establish the school on the site "as quickly as possible".
