The New Zealand Association of Convenience Stores (NZACS) today announced that it is working to develop a set of guidelines over the sale of energy shots in retail outlets.

"NZACS is currently working with manufacturers and retailers to ensure that the new 'energy shot' category of energy drinks are not sold to children," announced Mr Roger Bull, Chairman of the NZACS.

"NZACS recognises the public concern over an incident in Wellington where a 15 year old girl consumed a number of energy shot drinks in excess of the recommended daily intake," said Mr Bull, "That is why we have sought the input from both manufacturers and retailers over the development of guidelines over these new products".

"This recent incident reinforced NZACS views that we all need to play a part to ensure this new product category is managed responsibly."

"We will be liaising with the New Zealand Food Safety Authority and other interested parties to ensure that retailers across the country understand their responsibility over these products," said Mr Bull. NZACS will release further information about this initiative shortly.
