Sacred Hill Scoops Trophy And Gold At Hawkes Bay Wine Awards

Sacred Hill Wines has been awarded a Trophy and Gold medal for its 2007 Brokenstone Merlot at Hawkes Bay A&P Mercedes-Benz Wine awards 2009. The 2007 vintage also took out Best Sustainable Wine of the Show. The Best Sustainable wine of the Show trophy is awarded to the top scoring wine produced from a certified sustainable vineyard. A Gold medal was also awarded for the 2007 Sacred Hill Wine Thief Syrah and Silver for the 2007 Sacred Hill Deerstalkers Syrah.

"Winning a gold medal for the Brokenstone Merlot was a great accolade but to follow up with a Trophy is fantastic news. We have received some extraordinary accolades over the past few months for our Special Selection wines and these medals further confirm the exceptional quality of these hand crafted wines," says Tony Bish, Sacred Hill Senior Winemaker

The 2007 Sacred Hill Brokenstone Merlot and the 2007 Helmsman Syrah are only produced in years when the quality of grapes is considered to be of high enough excellence. The 2007 vintage was deemed to be outstanding, with the Hawkes Bay and Gimblett Gravels region experiencing exceptional weather allowing maximum fruit maturity and finesse.

Both these wines have already received outstanding accolades from local and international wine critics and judges, with the Helmsman recently rated by the editor of Wine Spectator, Harvey Steiman, as his top wine, and the Brokenstone Merlot making the final five Merlots in Australasia for the Winestate Magazine Wine of the Year Competition.

The 2007 Wine Thief Syrah is also produced from grapes sourced from Sacred Hill's Gimblett Gravels estate vineyard. Currently Syrah is the 'rising star' of Hawkes Bay and this wine highlights this ascent.

"We are really excited that all of these medal winning wines are from Estate Gimblett Gravels' vineyards which show the outstanding nature of this sub region for producing high quality, award winning red wines," says Bish.

The 2007 Sacred Hill Brokenstone Merlot and the 2007 Sacred Hill Wine Thief Syrah are available nationwide from all fine wine retailers.

The winner of the Viticultural Scholarship, supported by Sacred Hill Wines was also announced at last night's Award dinner. The Scholarship will provide financial support for EIT student Katrina Allen by way of funding Katrina's third year academic fees and providing an opportunity for viticultural employment on Sacred Hill vineyards.
