BP's management must have a macarbe sense of humour. The place they have chosen to send their soon-to-be former chief executive Tony Hayward to is none other than Siberia!
This was the place that Russian czars and Soviet leaders exiled dissidents to in earlier times. Now BP, who were wanting to grant Hayward his wish - that of getting his life back - have sent him to the place where former Soviet leaders were once sent to manage power stations. It won't be a power station that Hayward will be managing but a series of Siberian oil fields where BP has drilling rights.
The Russian leaders of old sent political exiles to Siberia so that they would be out of sight, out of mind. BP have no doubt done the same as they won't be wanting to hear from Hayward for a long time. And just to be sure of his silence, they have decided to give him a golden handshake of $2 million and on top of that a $1.3 million a year lifetime pension. If ever BP gets back into the black (financially and not ecologically speaking) then Hayward will be able to cash in some shares. It makes me think that if this is unfair. After all, what ordinary worker would get a hefty payout for incompetence and poor performance? None.
Speaking of workers, it seems that the world's corporate media have forgotten the eleven oil workers killed during the initial explosion back in late April. What compensation are they going to receive from BP? Let us not forget the thousands of ordinary fishermen and small businesspeople whose livelihoods have been practically destroyed by the oil spill. BP are going to have to pay up big time to these people.
Ideally, Hayward should have received zero compensation just like ordinary workers have to. Otherwise, I think it would be fair for sacked workers to ask for compensation too! As the old saying goes, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.
In the meantime, BP's new chief executive Bob Dudley is going to have his hands full. It's clear that the company is nearly stuffed given the way it has appallingly handled the biggest oil spill in history. If he wants to get the company's credibility back, he might like to start with taking away Hayward's compensation package. And then he might like to tell Hayward that he can have all the life he wants back - through telling him to go and register with the Louisiana state welfare office.
There Hayward might finally meet many of the spill's human victims who can tell him how much of a life they now don't have themselves!
Realistically, I don't think that will happen - but it would be nice to see Hayward punished in such a way!

I think thats where Chris Carter might be taking a trip to soon!! Take the Rainbow brigade with him too, and the Labour Party might have a chance to return to it's "Roots", a working class party!!
