United Airlines to launch nonstop Auckland - San Fran service

United Airlines today announced that it will introduce nonstop flights between Auckland and its San Francisco International Airport hub, effective July 3, 2016 (eastbound), subject to government approval.

United will use the world’s most advanced passenger airplane, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, to operate the flights. Initially the service will operate three times weekly with 787-8 aircraft. Effective October 30, 2016 (eastbound), the service will operate daily with the larger-capacity 787-9 aircraft.

"We’re very excited about adding Auckland to our industry-leading global route network and offering our New Zealand customers nonstop service to the U.S.," said Jim Compton, United’s vice chairman and chief revenue officer. "Customers will not only be able to fly with United direct to one of America’s most popular business and tourism destinations, they’ll also benefit from seamless onward connections via our San Francisco hub to cities throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central/South America."

The flights will be operated in coordination with United’s Star Alliance partner Air New Zealand. United and Air New Zealand have a long-standing partnership and will continue to work together to promote and serve the New Zealand-U.S. market.

"United Airlines' return to the New Zealand market will be great for travelers in both directions, and will provide a welcome boost to tourism in New Zealand," said Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon. "We look forward to building an even stronger partnership with United, and to working together with United to further build this market."

The flights will be available for booking on October 17, 2015. United customers in New Zealand will be able to book flights by visiting or contacting United reservations on 0800-747-400 or their travel agent.

Flight schedule

Flight UA916 will depart Auckland at 1:20 p.m., arriving in San Francisco at 6:40 a.m. the same day. The return flight, UA917, will depart San Francisco at 10:45 p.m. daily, arriving in Auckland at 6:55 a.m. two days later (all times local). The first westbound flight will depart San Francisco on July 1, 2016. Flying times will be approximately 12 hours, 20 minutes eastbound and 13 hours, 10 minutes westbound.

United has timed the new flights to connect at San Francisco with an extensive network of service throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America. United and United Express jointly operate flights from San Francisco to more than 269 destinations throughout North, Central and South America and the Caribbean, including more than 67 served non-stop. With this new service, United will provide convenient round-trip one-stop service between Auckland and more than 44 U.S. cities, including more than 40 cities that do not have single-carrier, one-stop service from Auckland today.
