Villa Maria Reds Win Big At Aussie Wine Awards

Top New Zealand wine producer Villa Maria has returned from prominent Australian wine competitions held over the weekend, with top awards for some of its most popular red wines.

Villa Maria's Private Bin Merlot 2008 collected a trophy and an accompanying gold medal at the Perth Royal Wine Show - the biggest wine competition in Western Australia - where the Reserve Marlborough Pinot Noir 2007 also won gold.

More than 2300 wines from Australia and New Zealand were judged in the competition.

Success continued for Villa Maria and associated brand Vidal at the Tri Nations Wine Challenge announced in Sydney on Saturday night, where double-gold medals (runner-up equivalent) were awarded to the Villa Maria Reserve Hawkes Bay Merlot 2006 and Vidal Reserve Hawkes Bay Syrah 2006.

The Tri Nations Challenge is unique on the wine awards calendar, with entries made by invitation only to the best of Australian, New Zealand and South African wines.

Villa Maria group winemaker Alastair Maling says New Zealand is producing some exceptionally good red wines, particularly in key growing regions such as the Hawkes Bay and Marlborough.

"These awards won by Villa Maria are further testament to the ongoing pursuit of quality in our vineyards and winemaking.

"The Reserve wines are of a particularly high calibre thanks to a consistent run of quality vintages and a strong emphasis on viticultural management. The resulting wines are elegant and complex in style, and extremely food friendly," says Maling.
