16 June 2009 - Corrections is this week marking Volunteer Awareness Week with events around the country to recognise the importance of volunteering, and the benefits volunteers can bring into the prison environment.

Corrections today revealed that a potential escape from Nikau Unit at Waikeria Prison in early March was foiled because of the vigilance and timely actions of staff.

Te Awamutu Detectives and Rotorua Police have apprehended Robert John WIKAERE, who had escaped from Waikeria Prison on 17 March.

WIKAERE was arrested without incident at a Rotorua property at approximately 2pm this afternoon.

17 September 2008 - The Department of Corrections today announced that it had successfully blocked a number of attempts to smuggle large quantities of drugs into New Zealand Prisons.

An escaped prison inmate, on the run since fleeing a low security unit at Waikeria Prison overnight, was recaptured in South Auckland late this morning.

Detective Sergeant Ross Patterson of Waipa CIB said Harold Quentin WI, 25, was recaptured in Manurewa.
