As a new gardening show is about to air, the Mental Health Foundation encourages New Zealanders to cultivate their gardening skills and improve their sense of wellbeing at the same time.

Gardening is becoming the hot new leisure activity for young, middle-class city dwellers, who are increasingly turning to NZ Gardener magazine to guide their growing interest.

A resourceful single mother-of-two has been named NZ Gardener's 2009 Gardener of the Year, in association with Bunnings Warehouse.

A thrifty single mum, a 94-year-old who has pressed thousands of flowers for charity and an 8-year-old with a small vege patch and a big heart have all been named as finalists in NZ Gardener magazine's 2009 Gardener of the Year competition, in association with Bunnings Warehouse.

More and more Kiwis are getting out and digging their own patches, if the growth of New Zealand's most-read gardening magazine is any indication.

New Zealand's top selling gardening magazine, which is inspiring more and more kiwis to grow their own, has snapped up the Supreme Magazine of the Year award at the Magazine Publishers Association Magazine awards this evening (June 25, 2009).
