48 Hours Furious Film Making Competition

5th June 2009 - Well the regional finals have come and gone and the different cities know the films that will be representing them at the grand final on the 20th of June presented live on C4. Those 6 films will also be joined by the 3 wild card films hand picked by Peter Jackson and his secret judge. This year’s secret judge was Guillermo Del Toro who is in Wellington at the moment working on the film adaptation of ‘The Hobbit’.  Del Toro you might know as the director of the ‘Hell Boy’ films and ‘Pans Labyrinth’.

Either way, having the honour of being picked as a wild card is a great achievement, especially considering Peter Jackson’s wild cards have won the grand final the last two years in a row. This shows that the judges in the different cities don’t always make the right choice when it comes to the overall best film in their respective cities. It was even more obvious last year when the grand final winner, and the film that came 2nd, were both Peter Jackson wild card films. There was even a little surprise this year with Jackson and Del Toro picking 3 Auckland films as their wild cards.

This year, however, some of the best films in the competition get the chance to screen on C4 in the build up to the big final. There has been criticism in the past that the grand final doesn’t give a good reflection of the quality of films that are made each year. So instead of only 2-4 of the best films being screened on TV, via the grand final, this year up to 30 of the top films will be seen. This might help alleviate some of the past years concerns. Most of those 30 films are screening purely for entertainment value as they will be out of the main competition.
Those screenings start Monday 8th of June on C4, and will screen every week night at 11pm and will lead nicely up to the grand final on the 20th. If you want to see what kiwi film makers are capable of in just 48 hours then I suggest everyone check it out - especially Tuesday, 9th June, as that’s when our film ‘CUZ’ screens. :)
