The Amazing China Face Race

Finding one person among the 1.4 billion people who live in China, without knowing that person’s name, is going to keep secondary students in Hastings District busy for the next few weeks in The Amazing China Face Race.

The Amazing China Face Race is the brainchild of Hastings District Councillor, Kevin Watkins. It is the sequel to the very successful 2006 Ultimate Challenge and 2008 Ultimate Challenge, the latter culminating in the Sister Cities Wedding, and the 2015 Amazing China Face Race.

The Amazing China Face Race has developed out of the earlier Hastings District Secondary schools 2006 and 2008 Ultimate Challenges, competitions which were geographically based around our Chinese Sister City, Guilin. The purpose of these competitions was to create a fun way of learning more about Guilin, its people, its culture, its history and its incredible landscape. All of the competitions offered a grand prize for the winning Hastings student to visit our Sister City Guilin, to visit schools, engage with their Guilin peers, immerse themselves in a new culture, and share with those in Guilin, our New Zealand culture and in particular our way of life here in Hastings. The Grand prize allows a Hastings student an opportunity to visit a new country that otherwise may have been beyond their reach.

This same spirit is intended for the 2018 Amazing China Face Race and reflected in the general rules and in particular, the eligibility to win the Grand Prize trip to China.

Without a doubt, this 2018 project will be just as ambitious and challenging for our Hastings District secondary students. They will be searching to identify one un-named face in China, and if all the clues and questions are correctly answered, the students will be lead to where the Face can be found and identified.

The motivation behind the "The Amazing China Face Race", said Kevin, "is to kindle teenagers’ interest in China and its people. All the clues have a geographical, historical or social angle, which means the competitors will learn a lot about China as they progress", he said.

The first 30 clues will knock out the regions in which the "Face" does not live, after which the clues will focus on getting the teens closer and closer to the target person. Students are encouraged to use "all their wits" to be the first to identify the "Face", said Mr Watkins.

The first student to make contact with the "China Face", get that person’s name and a code word and submit that information to Hastings District Council wins a two-week trip to China.

Details of the world-first competition, which will see students solve daily clues to narrow the search, will be unveiled on Thursday June 4 at each of the district’s secondary schools.

The first three clues go out on Thursday. View the clues printed daily in Hawke’s Bay Today, or sign up on the website.
