Tempo will bring Auckland to life with over 50 spectacular events this October showcasing an inspiring range of dance, including new work by New Zealand and international artists that empower and inspire. This year’s headliners have us more excited than ever before!

We're thrilled to announce three of our hottest headliners today! We welcome to Tempo Dance Festival 2018: Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company, Muscle Mouth and BoyzDance2. All are NZ premieres and all are on exclusive pre-sale for the next 10 days only! Save $10 off each ticket and secure your seat for a sold-out season!

The Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company presents ADAPTATION, a visceral evening of thought provoking, cutting-edge contemporary dance featuring new work by one of LA’s hottest dance companies. Performed by this captivatingly virtuosic company, the four works in ADAPTATION reflect the diversity and energy of a city on the edge of the Pacific where the West Coast meets the world. Offering moments of beauty, chaos, humour, and tenderness, LACDC bring to our shores for the first time a slick and sassy programme of LA glam and West Coast grittiness.

In a futuristic landscape of isolated rooms and transfer pods, two humans meet to undergo a replacement procedure that has become necessary for progress. In a new work by acclaimed dance company Muscle Mouth, System offers an eerie look into a possible future for our physical bodies when reproduction has transformed into something closer to information replication. System is performed by two of New Zealand’s leading dancers, Ross McCormack and Luke Hanna. A third character is the room itself, which is given life and power through a rich collaboration of precision-led choreography, intelligent lighting, and a highly detailed sonic and audio-visual landscape.

From world champion hip hop crews to stellar international dance careers, BoyzDance2 was the beginning of it all for countless young boys who just wanted to dance. Twenty years on from its founding, the BoyzDance2 network are celebrating the global successes of its founding members and the ongoing community of support for boys making their mark on the world through dance. METAMORPHOSIS brings to the stage four electric new creations alongside an energising and humorous retrospective of BoyzDance2’s most significant works over the past 20 years with an exhilarating cast of 30 boys aged 7-18 years old performing movement percussion, hip hop, contemporary, and haka fusion.

Under the creative direction of Richie Cesan (NZSD, ATC), 6 professional choreographers and former BoyzDance2 members - Andrew Cesan (Momentum Productions, CUDO), Joshua Cesan (Director and Principal Choreographer of IDCO, NEXT), Simon Watts (STOMP), Gareth Okan (NZDC), and Taniora Motutere (IDCO, Okareka, Atamira, Footnote) - contribute to METAMORPHOSIS, a celebration of how the power of dance can transform boys into men.

"Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company bring with them their own slick style of dance that is sexy, strong and diverse. The urban LA glam scene meets the sunshine-kissed West Coast surf with a programme I know will get Auckland super excited about sassy LA dance culture.

BoyzDance2 is an Auckland institution that has been instrumental in putting New Zealand dancers on the map globally. But all that aside, Metamorphosis will be a fun and funky show that will appeal to the whole whanau and inspire a future of boys who love to dance.

Hands down, Muscle Mouth consistently deliver some of the best contemporary dance in New Zealand, and their new work System has set a new standard of brilliance. Even people who claim they don't like contemporary dance will love this work. Do you like Black Mirror? Are you a sucker for dystopian tragi-comedies? There is some serious futuristic psychology going on in System and you will kick yourself if you miss this" says Tempo Artistic Director Carrie-Rae Cunningham.
