As the first week of life in tropical Fiji draws to a close on Heartbreak Island, the couples learnt that it’s going to take more than good looks and good chat to keep them safe on the island.

Tonight, Auckland student Ella Caunter and Wellington based Pilot Instructor Izaak Ryan were the first couple to walk the jetty and say goodbye to their time on Heartbreak Island.

Each week, the couples will be faced with challenges that test their commitment, communication, mental and physical strength - as well as getting them up close and personal. And tonight, they discovered these challenges were key to their survival on the island and would take them closer to the grand prize of $100,000 and an all new Suzuki Swift Sport.

The first challenge the couples had to compete in was The Ball Breaker. Couples battled each other for the first time, with the guys elevated above the ground protecting four tiles from balls being fired at them by the opposing team’s girl. Perfect payback for Weiting against Harry!

It was obvious from the outset that Ella and Izaak’s place in the game was in jeopardy and hosts Mark Dye and Matilda Rice confirmed they were the lowest scoring couple and would leave the island unless the remaining Players used the Play Back option. This would give each remaining player the opportunity to bring Ella or Izaak back into the game, but in turn sacrificing their current partner.

But the connections formed by Ella and Izaak with the other Players weren’t strong enough to play them back into the game and they were the first couple eliminated from Heartbreak Island.

When reflecting on her time on the show Ella said: "The overall experience was amazing, although it was a short journey for me I learnt so much about myself that I hope I can put into the real world."

Izaak echoed Ella’s words adding: "Heartbreak Island is one of the most outrageous, yet fantastic things I have ever experienced."

Each week, the eliminated couple will head off on a date around Fiji to dish the dirt on the developing relationships back on Heartbreak Island; the back-stabbing, the betrayals and the blossoming romances as well as hearing their reactions to leaving.

For added sizzle, don’t miss Heartbreak Island UNCUT, Friday’s 9:30PM on TVNZ 2.

Then head back to the main show on Monday 18 June when Heartbreak Island returns with more twists, turns, tears, laughter, game-playing and romance as two new singles arrive on the island.
