A concert by three musicians who JS have lived experience of disability is one of the features of Have A Go Day 2018.

Held in Garden Place tomorrow (Thursday 6 December), Have A Go Day is held in the same week as the United Nations celebrates International Day of Persons with Disabilities - and a Waikato Regional Council’s announcement of a discounted rate for disabled passengers on the city’s bus service.

Judy Small, Hamilton City Council’s Disability Advisor, says Have A Go Day showcases services and products available to people who live with impairments, and also builds understanding of life with a disability. The event is a collaboration between the Council, Waikato Regional Council, BusIt and Life Unlimited, a Hamilton-based charity providing information, advice and products to the disabled community and CCS Disability Action - a provider of services for disabled people.

"The 2018 United Nations day theme is social inclusion and participation, which ties in nicely with a focus on public transport, ways to increase mobility and disabled people performing in the concert," she says. "As our population ages, more people encounter impairments in their lives, and it’s important JS they are active, involved and valued in our community."

Judy says the addition of the Life Unlimited Kapa Haka performance and a performance by musicians Timothy Folkema and Stephen Bennett, joined by vocalist Louise Henry, emphasises this community participation.

"We wanted to inject some entertainment into this year’s Have a Go Day and being able to showcase local musicians who have impairments does that," she says.

Products on display include a modified hand-controlled car, mobility scooters and wheelchairs, while BusIt will have a presence with an accessible bus. This is an important transport option for all of the city’s residents - particularly those unable to drive or who have impairments which make getting around the city a challenge.

Have A Go Day will be held in Garden Place from 11am to 1.30pm on Thursday 6 December. In the event of poor weather, a cancellation decision will be made at 9am on the day.
