Locals and visitors are set to enjoy a taste of "country comes to town" on the 9th of March with what is fast becoming an iconic annual event for Wainuiomata.

Rural Fest Wainuiomata showcases the nostalgic activities associated with country life and will include pony rides, adorable farm animals to pet, sheep shearing, gumboot tossing, a country craft fete, as well as an old fashioned bake off and sand saucer competitions.

Food will be available for the event including a Sausage Sizzle and no event is quite the same without the favourite donut and coffee carts. Several local food outlets will also be open along Queens Street adjacent to the event.

This year as a lead up to the event locals are being encouraged to make their own scarecrow and position it in their front yard. Scarecrows will be advertised on facebook and the rural fest website for visitors and locals to do a drive by for viewing and photo opportunities. Schools and businesses have also been invited to take part in what originated from the original nostalgic Moore’s Valley Scarecrow days which was re-established in 2018.

Locals and those living in the greater Wellington Region are encouraged to "make a day of it" with a visit to the Wainuiomata Art Exhibition being held in the local library and to add in a short walk to the Historic Wainuiomata Dam or a drive to see rugged beauty of the Wainuiomata Coast.

Rural Fest will be taking place at the Queen Street Reserve from 11am to 3pm on Saturday March 9. For more information on the event, including how to enter the bake off, sand saucer competitions and more visit www.ruralfestwainuomata.com
