If you are an artist looking for a new opportunity, the Coromandel 200 community group is still looking to commission a commemorative piece of public art to mark the arrival of HMSS Coromandel to our waters, 200 years ago.

But don't delay - if you've got a concept you'd like to develop into a piece of art that fits the criteria below, get your expression of interest in by 28 February.

The HMSS Coromandel dropped anchor in what is now called Coromandel Harbour to collect timber for spars and to survey the coast in 1820. A model of the ship can be seen at the Coromandel School of Mines and Museum at 841 Rings Road, Coromandel Town.

A working group, "Coromandel 200", made up of a small team of enthusiastic community members is making it their mission to ensure this significant date is commemorated in an appropriate manner.

Closing date for expressions of interest - 28 February 2019

Criteria:

- The panel selecting the final piece will give consideration to the following design criteria:

- Presentation - Development and research

- Authenticity - Use of local materials, appropriateness to the commemoration and consideration of heritage values.

- Complexity - Compelling, engaging, interesting

- Workmanship - Knowledge of materials to be used, attention to detail of construction.

- Aesthetics - Appropriateness to the site and surrounding environment.

- Suitability - Robust to withstand environmental conditions, including vandalism

Artists are asked to provide:

- An introduction of themselves

- A brief description of the piece, including size and materials to be used

- Indication of cost

- Photographic examples of some other works

Applicants will be notified of the outcome. The successful artist will be expected to have the piece completed by April 2020, and provide the Coromandel 200 Committee with updates of their progress over the 12-month period.

Expressions of interest can be emailed to Coromandel200@tcdc.govt.nz or delivered to: TCDC Coromandel Office, 355 Kapanga Road, Coromandel Town.
