After Dick Frizzell’s inaugural take on the iconic Tui last year, the Artist's Tui is now a hotly anticipated part of the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards | Ngā Tohu Puoro o Aotearoa - a unique interpretation of the awards and our celebration of Kiwi musicians.

This year, Recorded Music New Zealand is proud to announce acclaimed artist and jeweller Boh Runga as this year’s Tui designer at an announcement event at Hallertau Brewery.

With several Tui on her own mantlepiece, Boh and her band Stellar- took New Zealand by storm in the early 2000’s - winning seven Tui at the 2000 NZ Music Awards alone including Album of the Year, Single of the Year for ‘Violent’, Top Group and Top Female Vocalist.

Inspired by the Matariki constellation, this Tui design aims to reflect how far Aotearoa’s musicians have come and how hard they work to create art that resonates and connects with others.

"I’m so thrilled to have been asked to design the Tui for the 2019 Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. The initial inspiration came from the idea of us as a people gathering under the night sky, coming together under our Southern constellations to celebrate our artists’ musical achievements," says Boh.

"Echoing the way Māori navigated great oceans and distances by the stars, in their own way our artists have navigated obstacles in their musical path to be recognised and honoured. On the most important date in New Zealand musical calendar the stars have aligned for them."

Recorded Music New Zealand CEO Damian Vaughan says it’s a privilege to work with Boh and see her vision for the Tui come to life for the award’s this year.

"As a musician and recipient of many Tui in the past, it was an obvious choice to ask Boh to design her interpretation of what the award means for Kiwi musicians," says Vaughan.

"We present Tui as a celebration of the work our musicians put into refining and perfecting their craft, and we feel like this design captures this sentiment perfectly."

Alongside the Tui Artist announcement, head brewer at Hallertau Stephen Plowman is excited to reveal the limited-edition range of Hallertau beer to accompany the awards this year.

"We’ve worked on a special Golden Ale for the awards this year, something unique and special - just like the Tui nominees themselves! The bottles are wrapped in a special custom-designed label that will include an element of augmented reality.

"Using a smartphone to bring the labels to life, New Zealand music fans will be able to experience the Music Awards in a way like never before. People will be able to access new, unique content - I’m personally super excited to see how people react."

The Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards | Ngā Tohu Puoro o Aotearoa will be broadcast live on Three on 14 November from 8.30pm. General public tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster.
