There is a bigger pot of funding for community groups looking to hold arts and cultural projects in Central Otago this year.

Creative New Zealand recently reassessed its funding to align with 2018 Census population figures. This saw Central Otago’s annual funding increase from $18,527 to $27,600. Funding criteria has also been changed, with the previous cap of $2,000 per project dropped.

Central Otago District Council administers the grant on behalf of the national funder. The Creative Communities Scheme aims to promote, support and increase community participation in the arts and cultural activities. Funding focuses on supporting artistic or cultural events and projects that are accessible to the community and encourage promotion of the arts within the district, with applications called for in two rounds per year.

In the most recent funding round grants went to the Maniototo Community Arts Council for a ceramic painting workshop for children; the Cromwell Community Arts Council for the Across the Bridge in Bannockburn 5-day arts festival and chamber music concerts; the Central Otago District Arts Trust for a public art project in the Teviot Valley; and towards a poetry tour by Laura Williamson of halls along the Otago Central Rail Trail, which was filmed for a documentary.

Assessment Committee Chair Councillor Shirley Calvert said it was fantastic news to have a funding boost for the arts locally.

"This funding is for everyone, not just for professional artists. It is a fabulous opportunity for anyone with an artistic skill or talent, to help them teach, share or present their art," said Cr Calvert.

Applications are currently being called for with the closing date for applications Friday 7 February. Applications are available from Council’s website or from all Council service centres.
