Entries are now open for Selwyn District Council’s Back to School colouring competition.

Over 8,000 children are returning to school in early February and the Council is running a colouring competition to remind children and their parents to be careful when walking and biking to school, and remember that extra vehicles will be on local roads between 8am and 9am and 3pm until 4pm, especially around schools.

The competition is open until Friday 12 February at 5pm. Entries will be judged in three age categories: 5-7 years, 8-10 years and 11-13 years.

Prizes include colouring-in packs featuring activity books, felt tip pens, colour pencils, and crayons.

Selwyn District Council Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Tinning says the competition will help children and their parents think about how they can get to school safely and to remember and use road rules. "We want to promote awareness that there are many children going back to school in early February and they will be walking, cycling, travelling by car, catching the bus and riding their scooters to and from school."

Entry forms are available at Selwyn District Council or any library or service centre. Children can return their completed drawings to a Council library or service centre.

Winners will be advised by telephone by 19 February.
