I’ve always been a big lover of documentaries, but I would say this year has been the year they have taken over as my number one favourite genre. I would even say that one quarter of the films I’ve seen at the cinema this year have been documentaries and half I’ve seen on DVD have been documentaries. So of course with this growing love of the genre getting stronger, I’ve been more actively seeking them out. Deep down, the reason I’m loving them more and more, comes down to my love of learning. Sure you can learn things from narrative features, but nothing comes close to sitting down and watching a good documentary and the information you can glean from them. So when I had a chance to review this Academy Award nominated documentary on the war in Afghanistan, I was quick to mark it down on my review list.

“Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington's year dug in with the Second Platoon in one of Afghanistan's most strategically crucial valleys reveals extraordinary insight into the surreal combination of back breaking labour, deadly fire fights, and camaraderie as the soldiers painfully push back the Taliban.”

This really was a no-holds-barred view into the world of modern day soldiers and it was great to see that they had the freedom to show everything and anything. Sure there could have been some things held back, but it didn’t feel that way at all, as every raw emotion and action was right there on the screen. From soldiers breaking down emotionally in mid fire fight; to their raw talk about killing the local Taliban fighters. This was told over a year and you really do see these young men change before your very eyes, and in a way, you get the feeling they will never be the same again, till their dying days. We are used to such things from people talking about the World Wars and Vietnam, so it’s interesting to see that once again we are seeing soldiers coming home broken forever.

9 out of 10 from me.

I also have a copy of this to give away to a lucky reader, so flick me an e-mail at likemike@nzblokes.co.nz to go in the draw!
