Space, such a pretty thing, and still so much we don’t know about it. I mean as each year passes our greatest minds discover more and more about the place but to be honest we may never know the whole story. But that has never stopped us trying to figure anything out in our short human history. So, part of that getting to know more about the universe around us was to get out there and actually step foot (?) into it which of course was why NASA was formed and why everything they did was leading to getting man, and for the PC brigade, women into space. With the space race between the USSR and the USA at its height, this TV mini series tracks the massive achievements and lengths that NASA went to, to win this race for space.

“Narrated by award-winning actor Gary Sinise, WHEN WE LEFT EARTH is the incredible story of humankind's greatest adventure, as it happened, told by the people who were there. From the early quest of the Mercury program to put a man in space, to the historic moon landings, through the Soyuz link-up and the first un-tethered space walk by Bruce McCandless, this is how the space age came of age. The vivid HD series features vintage rushes and all the key onboards filmed by the astronauts themselves. The sequences are captured by cameras onboard the spaceships, enabling the series to tell the stories in a depth never seen before.”

This was such a well made and well told story of NASA, and the overall space race in general and in fact informed me so much more than I thought it would. You see you think you have seen everything and heard everything, but then a new retelling of the story like this comes out and it feels like you are rediscovering things all over again. I must say though that I’m a bit of a conspiracy theorist and it did feel like there were subjects they just never touched on in this series, but hey, that’s for another whole series, review and time.

9 out of 10 from me!
