Blu-Ray Review – WW2 in HD

Over the years there have been many documentary series on wars, especially WW2, and they have tried to repackage the same war, but in a different way. With WW2 being right around the era of colour film, it’s a nice war to have two versions of; the war in black and white and the war in colour. Although over the years I never found myself caught up in the hype of having to see the war in colour with these various releases, when I had the chance to see ‘WW2 in HD’, with 95% of the footage being in colour, I thought maybe now was the time to have a look. For one, HD takes it to another level as they would have pulled out every bit of quality from the original stock as they could, and in many ways it could be seen as the definitive version of the war being presented in this new format.

“The program focuses on the firsthand experiences of twelve American service members during World War II, including an Army nurse, a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, a second generation Japanese American and prisoner of war, and an Austrian Jew immigrant. The twelve members recorded their time in both theatres and some had later interviews; found footage from the battlefield was paired with the stories of the twelve service members.”

I went into this series thinking it was going to be a good retelling of stories I have heard many times before, but instead, what they made was really personal while at the same time being a great complete overview of the whole war. The personal stories from within these hard times were just as interesting as the overall story of the war and, in fact, made you feel even more connected to such things as storming beaches of an island or fighting the enemy in the air.  This show even went as far as rivaling movies and live action TV series like ‘Saving Private Ryan’ and ‘Band of Brothers’. Overall this was a great series and in my eyes will be the definitive story of the war if I ever want to show someone else what happened during those years.

9 out of 10 from me.
