Blu-Ray Review - Cronos

Over the years I’ve seen most of Guillermo del Toro’s movies, with the exception of a couple of his early films, and I’m a fan of his, but I also have to say that I’m not as big a fan as some people are. Some think of him as the pinnacle director of fantasy movies, whereas I just think he’s pretty good. Pedantic maybe, but also most things in life are subjective anyway. So, when I had a chance to check out his first ever feature film ‘Cronos’ on Blu-ray, I jumped at the chance as many see it as an amazing film and it helped launch him into the big time. It was the largest budget Mexican film of all time when it was made, so I knew the production values were going to be pretty good, and with all that, I was looking forward to seeing the film that many have said is a masterpiece.

“In 1535, an alchemist builds an extraordinary mechanism encapsulated into a small golden device. The invention, designed to convey eternal life to its owner, survives its maker until 1997, when it shows up with an antiques dealer. Fascinated with the strange device, Gris doesn't notice that there's more than one person looking for it. The promise of eternal life has become an obsession for old and sick Mr. De la Guardia. He and his nephew will do anything to get the Cronos device.”

Well, this wasn’t exactly the great film I was expecting. Sure, it was an impressive first feature film, and a very ambitious film coming out of Mexico, but again, it just didn’t live up to all the hype that I had always heard about it. It shows, of course, a good progression from this first film to his more recent ones, but at the same time it didn’t exactly scream out to me that this director was going to go on to greater things after this first film. But, despite that, he has, and it should still be seen as a good first up effort.

6.5 out of 10 from me.

I also have a Blu-Ray copy of this to give away to a lucky New Zealand reader, so e-mail likemike@nzblokes.co.nz to get into the draw!
