Holding onto the top spot for the sixth week in a row, James Cameron’s Avatar continued to display enormous strength at the kiwi box office.
Charting over a million dollar for the sixth time in a row, the Pandora sci-fi epic easily led another red-hot frame continuing a scorching summer for the theatrical industry. Only off a mere 4.9% Avatar is benefiting from electric word –of-mouth and numerous repeat viewings as it closes in on Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’s all-time chart topping total of $14.5 Million. With a smidgeon under $12 Million in the bank already, the unstoppable Avatar is on track to knock the Peter Jackson flick off before the end of February.
Avatar also achieved another milestone at the international box-office. Becoming the first film to surpass the director’s own Titanic to rank as the number one foreign (i.e Non-North America) movie ever released. With a grand total of $1.8 BILLION, the seemingly impossible mark of $2 Billion is in the director’s sights.
Opening sensationally in second place was the latest Meryl Streep romantic comedy It’s Complicated. Averaging a potent $8000, Complicated interrupted the Avatar, Chipmunk, Holmes threesome that has dominated the charts in 2010. Managing to haul in $450,000, look for a profitable voyage ahead for the film.
Staying in third place on the back of the school holidays, Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel again proved a winning ticket with families as it collected another $267,000 to bring its overall total to a hair off of $3.5 Million. Falling out of the top three for the first time, Sherlock Holmes still collected $259,000 and continues to show strong legs and bodes well for both a sequel and the blockbuster Downey Jr Iron Man 2 later in the year.
Holding up well despite overwhelmingly negative reaction, The Tooth Fairy almost overtook Holmes on the charts this week, helped in no small way by another week of school holiday pocket money. The Lovely Bones collected another $181,000 to crest the $3 Million mark in its fifth week and Up In The Air stayed in seventh place, adding another $166,000 to its total.
Paranormal Activity deprecated by the largest amount in the top ten for another weekend, tumbling into eighth place. But the fright flick has already managed to top the million dollar mark, which would have been an exception return on its USD$11,000 budget if not for a hundred million dollar net at the US box office.
Ninth place was home to that other George Clooney film The Fantastic Mr Fox. Despite being a relatively hard sell to cgi-uped kids, the stop-motion throwback collected another $112,000 to move over the $500,000 mark at Kiwi registers. Old Dogs closed out the top ten and will thankfully slide into oblivion and out of the top ten next weekend. Total for the Travolta bomb is $618,000.
The top twenty continued the hot streak of 2010, almost doubling the same frame from last year. With the Kiwi box office coming off of a record 2009, look for 2010 to smash that record by a huge amount.
