Catch The Sights And Sounds Of Bali And India

Two critically acclaimed artists are set to perform in the capital as part of the Wellington Asia Residency Exchange (WARE) - an arts programme by Wellington City Council and the Asia New Zealand Foundation.

Balinese composer and gamelan musician Wayan Gde Yudane has just spent the past few months working alongside Gamelan Taniwha Jaya - an Indonesian percussive ensemble - at Victoria University's School of Music.

This is the second time Yudane has been at the university, having spent a year there as artist-in-residence in 2002, when he collaborated with New Zealand composer Jack Body.

The multi-award winner has produced works for concert performance, theatre, sound installations and film. Yudane's farewell performance, 'Musical Hunters and Collectors', takes place this Friday (15 October) at 7pm at the Adam Concert Room at Victoria University's Kelburn Campus.

Entry is free. Another multi-award winner, dancer Gayatri Balagurunathan, has just arrived from India to work with Vivek Kinra - a Wellington-based Indian classical dancer. This residency gives Gayatri and Vivek the opportunity to further develop their working relationship. Gayatri was here in 2006 where she performed with Vivek's Mudra Dance Company.

Together, they will work on a production of Krishna: The Dark One, to be performed early next year. Meanwhile, Gayatri will perform for the opening ceremony of this year's Diwali Mela. She will present two dances with the Mudra Dance Company as well as a solo performance. The Diwali Festival of Lights takes place from 1pm to 10.30pm at the TSB Bank Arena on Sunday 24 October.

Admission is free. WARE aims to connect Wellington's creative community with artists and arts organisations in Asian countries, increasing cross-cultural collaboration, and enhancing artists' international networks. All artists who come to Wellington live at the Bolton Street Cottage during their residency.
