Radio New Zealand launches its new multi-platform Checkpoint programme with John Campbell on RNZ National next Monday 18th January.

RNZ Head of Content, Carol Hirschfeld, has emphasised the importance of the new programme format, the quality of its content and John Campbell’s integrity as a trusted presenter.

"This is truly ground-breaking stuff for RNZ - radio with pictures where people can choose to listen on radio or to watch, on-line, and on TV via Freeview. It’s a chance for our audience to see the newsmakers, reporters and producers - a real behind the scenes look at how the show is put together.

"John Campbell is an outstanding broadcaster, with an affinity with RNZ audiences and the world-class journalism we produce. We look forward to building on the relationship we have with those who currently enjoy Checkpoint as well as reaching even more New Zealanders."

John Campbell has been working with RNZ colleagues since September as the new format evolved and said he was thrilled to be returning to his radio roots.

"The Checkpoint team is buzzing, RNZ’s commitment to professional journalism that questions, illuminates, celebrates and holds to account, is an immensely valuable resource in the life of this country and we are all keen to build on that reputation."

"We’ll be supported by RNZ’s regional reporters and a team of quality journalists from around the country bringing independent news and current affairs with the stories that really matter to New Zealanders."

Checkpoint with John Campbell

The new-format Checkpoint with John Campbell is a 90 minute programme, airing weekdays from 5-6.30pm, on RNZ National. The show will be broadcast live on radio, and those keen to see behind the scenes can watch a video live-stream on the RNZ website or, in most centres, on Freeview channel 50.

Audio and video clips from the programme will be uploaded to the website soon after they go to air, and can then be listened to or viewed at any time.

The programme will be a mixture of video and audio packages, and live and pre-

recorded interviews. Guests will join John via Skype, Live View, in the Auckland or Wellington studios or on the phone, as will RNZ reporters around the country and around the world.
