The Edge in association with Telecom unite for the debut of the biggest social networking revolution to strike New Zealand.

TEN CONTESTANTS UNDER LOCK & KEY, 24 HOUR AUDIOVISUAL SURVEILLANCE, $10,000 PRIZE MONEY, THE OBJECTIVE - ACCQUIRE AS MANY "FRIENDS" AS POSSIBLE IN A LIMITED TIME FRAME TO BECOME THE EDGE NEXT TOP FRIEND

The Edge announced today the start of a nationwide search for New Zealand's 'Next Top Friend'. Applications to be one of only ten contestants who will live together in an Auckland house, for up to four weeks open today, through to Friday 29th August. Register online at theedge.co.nz, or in person at one of the regional auditions - dates and locations below.

The ten contestants will create a fresh profile on Bebo, Facebook or The Edge's own MyPage sites and set about proving they have the personality and flair to become the most popular person in the country.

Under the supervision of 'House Host', television celebrity Brooke Howard Smith, the ten contestants while under 24 hour audiovisual surveillance will embark on a series of challenges (inside and outside the house) in an attempt to win friends and avoid elimination.

As youth market leaders, The Edge recognises the world-wide upsurge of the social networking phenomenon with popular sites such as Bebo and Facebook leading the way. 2.

Facebook claim, "More than 90 million people across the world have joined this movement and are using the site to communicate and share information."

And The New Zealand Herald was recently quoted as saying 800,000 Kiwi's use Bebo.

There is no doubt, today's generation of young adults are spending a significant time socialising on-line in preference to TV and other types of entertainment, even human interaction.

Leon Wratt, Programme Director of The Edge said; "The Edge Next Top Friend is a world first - a social experiment of sorts - whereby the number of 'virtual' friends you acquire via popular social networking sites is how you win! There is no limit, other than time and we're fascinated to see how big this will become."

So join in the social networking revolution and listen to The Edge throughout August and September to find out who will be The Edge Next Top Friend.
