The Crazies - Movie Watch

The title of this movie kinda stood out for me but that isn't why I decided to blog about it. I usually have my ear to the ground when it comes to movie news and movie releases but have to admit, if it wasn't for 'TheCraziesFilm' following me on Twitter, I might have completely overlooked it.

So I decided to do a little digging around and discovered that The Crazies is actually a remake of an older movie which was directed by none other than the father of zombie flicks, George A. Romero. My rather mild interest in this movie moved up a notch because George A. Romero is something of a legend, especially if you're a fan of horror flicks.

The synopsis focuses on a small town in the USA (in the original movie it was Evans City, Pennsylvania) where something seems to have gone terribly wrong with the towns' inhabitants. People are dying and/or becoming permanently insane (hence the title) and the military are called in to try and combat whatever it is that's causing it. The synopsis for the 2009 remake refers to contaminated water as the cause.

'Hitman' Timothy Olyphant (also from Deadwood) stars as the main character David who takes on the original role played by Will Macmillan. The movie also stars Australian actress Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, Pitch Black) and Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th 2009).

George A. Romero's input doesn't seem to be included in the remake (other than being listed as a writer for creating the characters) but the screenplay is written by Scott Kosar who also wrote the screenplay for The Amityville Horror (2005) and was the writer for The Machinist starring Christian Bale which I thought was a fantastic movie.

The Crazies twitter page is awesome and I don't think I've heard of any other distribution/marketing company promoting their movie quite as efficiently as this one. They've even got photos (via twitpic) taken onset and update their twitter several times a day. Even the stars from the movie get to tweet away... you should check it out although they all seem a little on the 'crazy' side... excuse the pun.
