DVD Review – Beneath The Sands, Ancient Egypt Revealed

I’m a huge ancient history buff, specifically about ancient Egypt, as there’s so much more than just history there - there’s also great mystery. Ancient Rome and Greece, of course, have many amazing sights to be seen from ancient times, but there isn’t as much mystery surrounding those cultures as there is around the Egyptian civilisation. Something similar can be said about a lot of the mysteries of the Central and South American cultures, but it’s the sheer age of the Egyptian culture, and the even deeper mysteries, which really sparks my interest. So, when I saw this seven disk pack bringing together seven Discovery channel documentaries on ancient Egypt, I knew I had to review it!

“The history of Ancient Egypt is a subject that continues to fascinate all ages and this superbly presented box set brings together seven of Discovery’s most absorbing documentaries on this amazing culture. Dramatic re-enactments, CGI, archival footage and extensive historical research will inform as well as entertain. Featuring over 10 hours of intrigue and mystery, ‘Beneath The Sands: Ancient Egypt Revealed’ ventures into the far off worlds of great pharaohs and queens, humble servants and majestic tombs.”

The documentaries were presented in chronological order of when they were produced, so it was cool seeing through the seven disks that some of the things which were stated as fact earlier on had been disproved by new discoveries in later disks. That’s also the great thing about archaeology, and specifically Egyptology, as new discoveries are happening all the time and as there are still so many mysteries surrounding the place, often there can be differing views on the ‘true’ history anyway. This was a great DVD pack and I highly recommend it to any fans of Egypt or ancient history.

9 out of 10 from me.
