DVD Review – Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil

I love animated films, and every year often one or two of them make it into my favourite films of the year list, with ‘Toy Story 3’ and ‘UP’ being two good recent examples. But like with any genre, there is a glut of these films in the market and many of them just look like average cash cows trying to pull in the almighty child dollar. When I saw the trailer for the first ‘Hoodwinked’ film, that’s exactly what I thought it was, and with what looked like very average computer graphic animation (CG), I just knew I wasn’t going to see this one. But when I had the chance to check out the sequel, I thought I would give it a chance to see if maybe I was wrong and then maybe the first would be worth a watch also.

“Hood vs. Evil will find a teen such as Red Riding Hood who will be training in a distant land with a mysterious, covert group called the Sister Hoods. When Red and the Wolf get called upon by Nick Flippers the head of the Happily Ever After Agency over to investigate the disappearance of Hansel and Gretel.”

Well I’ll say this, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, and I’ve seen worse animated films recently, ‘Cars 2’ being my example, sadly, of a recent dud. But it wasn’t great either. Some lacklustre jokes, directing, and storytelling made for just an average film, and it didn’t surprise me, after talking to a friend with a young child, that her 3 year old turned to her half way through the film, when watching it at the cinemas, and said ‘Mummy, can we change the DVD?’. Very cute, and very telling. So I’m sure some people will like this film, and if you liked the first I’m sure you’ll like the continuation of the characters, but for me I look for a lot more in my films these days.

6.5 out of 10 from me.
