DVD Review – The Hunter

Australia has been on form over the last few years with a couple hard hitting genre pieces, with the true crime film ‘Snowtown’, and the roughly based true crime film ‘Animal Kingdom’. So one thing they’ve been doing right recently are the darker edged crime thrillers, and when I saw the trailer for ‘The Hunter’ I was excited, as it starred William Defoe and I thought this could be them taking even one more step up in the quality stakes!

“Martin, a mercenary, is sent from Europe by a mysterious biotech company to the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger.”

Well sadly, it was a pretty lacklustre thriller! I'm not sure if it was the book it was based on that hamstrung it, but the script and the story telling really lacked. Not to mention the really dark ending that they tried to present as an almost uplifting emotional moment. Though it did have elements I liked, so it's worth a watch.
