When it comes to comedy series the British are masters at the unique and odd ball style that was made very famous by ‘Monty Python’, but even before Python they had their own unique way of entertaining the masses. In more recent memory comedians like Harry Enfield, Catherine Tate and the Little Britain guys have flown the flag of the wacky British sensibilities, but a new name, Kevin Bishop, was brought to my attention recently. ‘The Kevin Bishop Show’ came out in 2008 and although I had never heard of him or the show until recently, when I had a chance to check out the first season I already had a preconceived idea of the type of comedy this would be and hoped it would be as good as those comedies that came before this one.

“The sketch show is fast-paced and based on flicking through channels on Sky Digital. On screen is a replica of the Sky Search and Scan banner and TV guide. Unlike the pilot, the search and scan banner displays the date which is the same as the date the episode is being broadcast, with roughly the same time as it is going out. There are many other TV presentation references throughout the show, mostly related to the TV channels the "shows" are on.”

I wasn’t disappointed when the show started off with a madcap style reminiscent of previous British comedians, but what was instantly evident was the way in which the show was put together. The format of it being someone channel surfing through a digital TV system, showing skits ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes long, was a breath of fresh air while at the same time feeling a bit like the USA clay animation comedy show ‘Robot Chicken’. Kevin Bishop himself is clearly a master of impressions as he must have pulled off 30-40 different ones throughout the show ranging from famous British celebrities to just normal people. With a great cast of supporting actors around him this made for a great show and I’m sure there will be more seasons to come.
