New Dragon Gate Inn

When looking for a film to review recently, I saw the title for this Hong Kong action film and read in the description that it had Donnie Yen and Tony Leung in it and, for some reason, I thought this was the name of a more recent film. So when it turned up in my letterbox, I was surprised to see that the cover was of a completely different movie than what I thought it would be.  Instead of a modern set police action film it was a historical set action film. However, being a big lover of Hong Kong cinema, I was keen to see it regardless.

“During the Ming Dynasty, Tsao Sui Yan, the power-hungry and ruthless eunuch leader of East Chamber, craves his own kingdom. He intends on destroying the rebelling clans by using a traitorous secretary's children as bait. Ultimately, the two warring factions - the rebels led by Chow Wai-on and Mo-yan Yau, the East Chamber led by Tsao - end up in the rundown Dragon Inn right in the middle of the desert. Jade King, the beautiful owner and proprietor of Dragon Inn, hopes to cash in on the incident. But problems arise when Wai-on, desperate for the quickest route of escape, attempts to marry Jade in hopes of prying her for information; and the two clans go head-to-head in a no-holds barred finale battle.”

I’m more used to the ‘real’ style of Hong Kong action films so it had been a long time since I had seen a film like this one, with its hugely over the top style of fighting, with lots of wire work and gravity-defying flying around. You can see how films like ‘Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon’ had been inspired by the country's past films.  By the end of this film I had become used to the over the top action and it was easier on the eye than it was at the start of the film where the flipping and flying was hard to follow. With a half decent story this film held up well to other action films of its ilk, but it’s not one I’ll be watching again anytime soon.

6.5 out of 10 from me.
