Over the years I’ve seen a lot of pirate films, with the four major motion picture films, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, dominating box office results over the past 8-10 years. With those films bringing pirates into the mainstream, meant other such movies would, of course, hit our screens, but not just the big screen, but the small screen as well. So, when I saw this History channel show come up on my DVD review list, I thought it would be a good chance to check out some of the stories of the real pirates of the Caribbean.
 
“Pirates! They sail outlaw ships filled with despicable men. They dress in outlandish costumes and speak with flourished words. They carry parrots on their shoulders and send their enemies down wooden planks. But these are the pirates of fiction that have been romanticized in countless books and films. But how much do we really know about actual pirates and how accurate are our impressions?”
 
I’ve seen a lot of these types of documentaries of late, which mix interviews with experts and re-enactments. Often everything is pretty well done, but sadly with this series, the re-enactments were pretty average, from the acting through to the writing and directing, although the rest of it was quite good. However, of the three shows that were merged with this series, I did find some of the information about the same subject was different, which left me wondering what the ‘true’ facts were.
