Reno 911!, Season 2

‘Reno 911!’ has been around since 2004 and it’s a show that I had always been aware of but never watched.  A few months back I was able to watch the first season and that quickly got me hooked as a fan. With six seasons having now been made this means I’ve got a lot of catching up to do, so I got my hands on season 2 and hoped it still held the magic the first season was able to capture. With the same cast back for the second season and maybe a bigger budget, which shows often have once they get picked up for more seasons, I was optimistic that the series would be taken to a higher level.

“The lives of seven incompetent Reno sheriff's deputies are detailed in this "Cops" style parody. Among the colourful characters are Lt. Jim Dangle, the short shorts-wearing, flamboyantly gay supervisor; Deputy James Garcia, who makes police brutality an art form; Deputy Trudy Wiegel, the manic depressive, racist sociopath; Deputy Clementine Johnson, the skanky former magician's assistant; Deputy Travis Junior, the redneck who is never seen without his kevlar vest and sunglasses; Deputy S. Jones, the semi-competent ladies' man; and Deputy Raineesha Williams, the bootylicious black cop with an attitude.”

One thing I got from this series was that it felt a little darker in nature than the first series. Now we are talking about a comedy show here, but it felt like there were a few more racial storylines and dark toned themes, which of course fits into the dark humour bracket. This could have been them trying to push the boundaries a little bit more for their second season, and it did fit the characters and the style, but was a little hard to get my head around at times. However, for me it still held up to the same strong level as the first series.

8 out of 10 from me.
