Red, White and Brown

Russell Peters is a Canadian/Indian comedian who has made his name with a brand of stand up that focuses on racial stereotypes and doing spot on accents of different people of the world, with a strong focus on Asian and Indians. Out of context he could be seen as a rather racist comedian but, because of his background, it comes off as almost okay as he takes apart the world around him and the people that populate it.

He was born in Toronto, Canada, to Indian born parents and grew up in a neighbourhood where every race, religion and, by the sounds of it, every type of handicap person lived. They not only seemed to live near him but seemed to either be Russell Peter’s friend or had a lot to do with him during his time growing up. More often than not he starts a new joke with the line ‘I have this friend’ and that leads right into a joke about Asians, Indians, blacks, whites, deaf, blind and almost any other type of person you can think of. Add in the fact that he will often target people in the audience to chat with and make fun of, it ends up being a routine full of 'on the fly' jokes that all tie in with his wider theme of race, religion and life.

This DVD ‘Red, White and Brown’ was recorded on 2nd February, 2008 at the WAMU Theatre at Madison Square Garden and was produced and financed by both himself and his brother. This must have been the reason why between June 2008 and June 2009 he earned $10 million, making him one of the highest paid comedians in the world during that time. This is his most recent DVD but he currently has a new show that is touring the world and he will even be in New Zealand in the next few months with it.

So, in the meantime, if you’re looking for the most recent work of his on DVD then don’t miss this great show as he really is a man at the height of his career and ‘Red, White and Brown’ is worthy of any good DVD collection.

8 out of 10 from me.
