However, the Next Top Friend promotion is already causing ructions amongst local residents in the upmarket Auckland suburb of Herne Bay, who threatened The Edge with a legal injunction if they moved into the area. The residents have successfully evicted the Top Friend contestants from their original house, even before they moved in, siting commerciality as a key reason for The Edge not being welcome. An alternative Auckland location has been confirmed.

Leon Wratt, Programme Director of The Edge said; "Despite this minor legal glitch, we are proceeding as planned, just in a different location. We've been blown away by the entries received by listeners to be The Edge's Next Top Friend. The diversity of our final Top Ten range from the fanatical to the down to earth Kiwi, these contestants are going to make this an extremely interesting and close competition".

Beginning next week the contestants will enter the house and will commit to daily challenges in an attempt to win as many 'virtual' friends as possible a claim the ultimate $10k cash prize
